Meet Sonjha Phillips, she is the Interim Oakland Athletic League (OAL) Commissioner and a member of the United Administrators of Oakland Schools (UAOS).

As Interim Commissioner for the OAL, Phillips helps students be successful in academics in athletics. The OAL is made up of six high schools in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) - Castlemont, Fremont, McClymonds, Oakland, Oakland Technical, and Skyline. The league provides a system for fair and equal sports competition among the high schools. In her role as interim commissioner, Phillips administers the OAL.

Phillips is an Oakland native. She left Oakland to attend college in Chicago at Loyola University of Chicago, where she earned a bachelor’s in sports management with a minor in marketing. Following graduation, she ran a non-profit for a Miami Dolphins football play in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Before returning to Oakland, she moved back to Chicago and co-founded 5th Quarter LLC, a company that focused on helping athletes in their transition off the field. During her time at 5th Quarter LLC, Phillips created the OAL Elite Football Camp, a program that served over 100 students and taught them leadership skills both on and off the field.
